Death penalty allowed in Egypt. The preferred method of execution is shooting and hanging. The application of capital punishment has expanded since former president Hosni Mubarak took office in 1981.
The Egyptian Constitution makes no reference to the death penalty but allows for the death sentence to be imposed for a large number of offenses. Because of this, killing a cat may be considered a crime punished by death. Capital crimes include murder, arson, abduction and rape of a female, and drug trafficking. All capital executions must firt be approved by the Mufti, the country's highest religious authority.
